Why Does Anyone Really Need A UV System in Their Home Anyway?

Having been a player in the manufacturing of UV water disinfection systems for more than 40 years, we get this kind of question all the time.
Why do I need it?
The answer is a little more nuanced than simply “to kill bacteria and virus in your water supply” which of course is the main function of a Wyckomar UV system... but it does not answer the question of why it's really needed.
We look at the question of why from several angles. The answer to why you need something depends largely on your perception of benefits received vs. cost, meaning will I get substantially more benefit from owning a UV system compared to what it costs to purchase and install it? If the answer is “Yes” then this is one reason why you may need one.
Need can also be related to a much more “in-your-face” type of problem. If your water well is currently contaminated with bacteria then by definition you need a UV system. Degrees of need are also present in this argument. Assume that your well is not contaminated currently but you are concerned (for a variety of reasons) that it may be at risk of becoming contaminated in the future. In this case you may need a UV system to mitigate future risk (even though no risk currently exists).
In trying to determine if you need a UV system in your home consider this:
- If your water supply is currently contaminated, then yes by all means you do “need” a UV water purification system immediately.
- If you want to make sure that your water supply never becomes contaminated with bacteria then yes you also need a UV system in your home.
- If you are certain that your water supply is currently safe and can never become contaminated with bacteria or virus, we would ask “how certain are you?” We think that installing a Wyckomar UV water purification system in your home is an inexpensive form of insurance that will ensure your water remains safe and clean always.
Do you really need a UV system? The answer is completely up to your definition of “need”.
